— Philip Weiss

LYNBROOK, N.Y., UNITED STATES, May 31, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — LYNBROOK, N.Y. – A large oil on Masonite painting by the Indian-American artist Francis Newton Souza (1924-2002) climbed to $235,000, and three artworks by the Russian artist Mihail Chemiakin (b. 1943) – a painting and two sculptures – combined to bring $44,800 at an auction held May 17th by Weiss Auctions, online and in the firm’s Lynbrook gallery at 74 Merrick Road.

The Souza painting was by far the top lot of the auction. Titled Head in a Landscape, the work was impressive at 35 inches by 47 ½ inches. It was also completely fresh to the market, making the important estate find that much more attractive to the collectors who were eager to bid on it.

Francis Newton Souza was raised by his dressmaker mother in India and attended art school in Mumbai but was expelled in 1942 for supporting the Quit India Movement. Five years later he helped found the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group, to encourage young Indian artists to become part of the international avant-garde movement. He moved to London, England in 1949.

There, his work was exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Souza’s style was rooted in Expressionism but was influenced by Art Brut and Neo-Romanticism. His subjects were often female nudes and Christian imagery but also included still-lifes and landscapes. Souza lived and worked in New York from 1967 until shortly before his death, when he returned home to India.

The auction saw more than 500 lots come up for bid and gross around $600,000, including the buyer’s premium. “Internet and phone bidding were both very strong, and approximately 75 people attended in person,” said Philip Weiss of Philip Weiss Auctions. “The sale featured estate jewelry, bronzes, a Philip and Kelvin LaVerne mid-century modern table, porcelains and more.”

Original artwork, however, dominated the day’s list of top lots. The three pieces by Chemiakin included a 50 inch by 50 inch oil on canvas painting, signed and dated (1990) and an excellent example of his work ($18,700); a 29-inch-tall bronze sculpture from his St. Petersburg Carnival series, signed #2 of 8 ($10,500); and a sterling silver sculpture titled Peter the Great perched on a titled marble pedestal, 37 inches tall and with mounted plaques bearing his signature ($15,600).

Mihail Chemiakin (whose name is also spelled Mikhail Shemyakin) is a Russian painter, stage designer, sculptor and publisher, and a controversial representative of the nonconformist art tradition of St. Petersburg. Chemiakin works in a broad range of media and subjects, as seen in the 2010 two-volume book on his art, Mihail Chemiakin (Azbooka publishers, St. Petersburg).

Following are additional highlights from the auction. Internet bidding was provided by Proxibid, Invaluable.com and Auctionzip.com. All prices quoted here are inclusive of a buyer’s premium.

A lithograph and screenprint in colors on Arches paper by renowned American painter, sculptor and graphic artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008), titled People for the American Way (1991), signed lower left, dated and numbered (“44/75”), and housed in a large and heavy 49 inch by 61 inch frame, gaveled for $24,600. It was a new world auction record for a print from that series.

A beautiful and monumental Royal Vienna hand-painted porcelain plaque depicting a religious scene, with an artist’s signature in the lower right appearing to read “E. Sihade”, changed hands for $8,525. The image area was 16 ½ inches by 21 ¼ inches, with an inked beehive mark verso.

A wonderful oil on canvas painting by C. Hjalmar “Cappy” Amundsen (Me./N.Y./Mass, 1911-2001), depicting whalers off the coast in a vivid and colorful marine rendering, brought $6,000. The work, housed in a frame measuring 42 ½ inches by 31 inches, was artist signed lower left.

Philip Weiss Auctions has three big sales lined up for June. The first, slated for Monday, June 11th, will be an on-site auction, to be held in the New York County Public Administrator’s warehouse, at 250 Church Street in Manhattan, starting at 12 noon. Offered will be estate material featuring furniture, paintings, prints, artwork, porcelain, pottery, bronzes, rugs, household bric-a-brac, electronics, musical instruments, lamps, clocks, collectibles and more.

Then, on Wednesday, June 20th, at the Lynbrook gallery, a sale dedicated to toys, trains, battery ops, diecasts, dolls, toy soldiers, pressed steel and more will be held, highlighted by Part 1 of the Kalas Collection but also to include further selections from the Jerry and Nina Green Collection of American and European trains and toys, Part 1 of the massive toy collection of George Dominguez, more of the Pennsylvania “Matchbox Hoard” and a newly arrived doll collection.

Handpainted Magnets to start your day with a smile

A sassy cat with a sassy attitude

Each piece of the collection was developed to inspire stressed people to cope with daily frustrations and start each morning with a smile

If I can help people to find a way to cope with daily challenges, or even just the daily stresses of work and family responsibilities, that makes me very happy.”

— Beth DeWilde

COTTAGE GROVE, OR, UNITED STATES, May 30, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — Puck & Pompey bring hand painted beauty and humor into people’s lives with magnets and fashion pins that say what they feel. The Signature collection, Morning Survival, launches on June 4th 2018 and showcases the humor that can be found in not wanting to get out of cozy beds and not wanting to get up in the early morning hours. One look at the Morning Survival Collection is a surefire way to remind people to let go of daily frustrations and start each day with a smile.

“Everyone has daily stresses in their work and family life, but voicing those frustrations in the moment may not be appropriate. This collection was created to offer people a way to relieve bottled up stresses and vent their frustrations in a healthy and constructive way. If I can help people to find a way to cope with daily challenges, or even just the daily stresses of work and family responsibilities, that makes me very happy,” owner and designer, Beth DeWilde, says.

This highly-anticipated collection of whimsical magnets and pins is inspired by regret, sarcasm, lack of productivity and times that it feels too “people-y” out there. The Morning Survival Collection features animals designed and hand painted by the artist, Beth DeWilde, each holding signs based on the incredibly popular current trends of cheeky phrases and memes about mornings. From the adorable grumpy cat, Confident Claude, with the classic sassy comment “Good Morning World! Your little ray of sarcastic sunshine has arrived!” to a Fed-up Phineas the Frog stating “I don’t like morning people, …or mornings, …or people”, there is something for everyone to love and connect with in this collection. In addition, the larger magnets sport the trendy colors of the season including copper, ultra violet, valiant poppy, and nebulas blue. Each magnet comes named and dated with the collection and year.

The Morning Survival Collection pieces are made from 2 pieces of 3mm High Quality Baltic Birch, acrylic paint, and strong ceramic magnets. The Collection also includes stands to display magnets on desktops or mantels, and includes select fashion pins and earrings only available in limited edition bundles. The collection will be exclusively sold on the website PuckandPompey.com where the limited products are anticipated to sell out by the end of the season.

John Loyd Dean Donates Thousands to Noonday Fire Department

John Loyd Dean is proud to be able to support the Noonday Fire Department with an eight-thousand-dollar donation.

HENDERSON COUNTY, TX, UNITED STATES, May 29, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — John Loyd Dean has always been a proud supporter of law enforcement and emergency response teams. Both professionally and personally, Dean has done his best to show his support for protection services throughout his home state of Texas.

Throughout his business endeavors, he has hired over fifty employees; many of which are retired military and police officers. Dean has a deep respect for law enforcement and the military, that he tries to showcase through his business.

However, while not all his support has been monetary, Dean is proud to fund emergency services through his business.

Recently, John Loyd Dean donated eight thousand dollars to the Noonday Fire Department.

About the Noonday Fire Department

The Noonday Fire Department is a non-profit organization, which is in Tyler, Texas.

This dedicated department does all it can, not only to help the community in crisis but also to bring the community together.

Events such as the annual Haunted House, Fish Fries, and Chili Cook-Offs, keep the Noonday Fire Department involved. The department works every day to show their appreciation to their community, as well as other emergency services.

However, it isn’t all fun and games for the Noonday Fire Department. They are extremely protective and honorable of their firefighters. Each year, they hold a memorial for those that have passed on.

Plus, at the end of the year, they hold a ceremony to honor their most dedicated firefighters. Awards given at this ceremony include Rookie of the Year, Firefighter of the Year, and Officer of the Year. This is a festive time for the Noonday Fire Department, but it is also a tradition that is taken seriously.

When duty calls, the Noonday Fire Department is always ready. Fire Chief, Richard Adams and Assistant Fire Chief, Kevin Londoff never back down in the heat of an emergency. Whether it is a Noonday Department call, or if one of their law enforcement brothers need a hand; they are on their way.

In addition to being responsive, however, the department is also an advocate for training. The Noonday Fire Department knows the importance of being ready for anything.

Donation Decision

“It’s the dedication Noonday has to their community that inspired me to donate to them,” John Loyd Dean said.

Dean recognizes all that Noonday Fire Department does, in the line of duty, as well as for the community. Being that John Loyd Dean is a proud supporter of his community as well, he admires the Noonday Fire Department’s continual efforts.

Dean knows that the money will be directly helping and protecting the community. Whether it helps the department purchase updated equipment or runs the daily operations of the department; Dean knows that the eight-thousand-dollar donation is going to good use.

To close, John Loyd Dean is thankful to have a fire department through which he can garner so much pride. Having such a stable and involved fire department does wonders.

The Noonday Fire Department is not only keeping the community safe, they are keeping the community together through their efforts. Every event, outreach, and training they do is just as appreciated by the community as the fires they put out.

John Loyd Dean Donates 10K to Children’s Advocacy Center

John Loyd Dean is a business owner that is committed to helping his community and home-state of Texas any way he can.

HENDERSON COUNTY, TX, UNITED STATES, May 29, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — Known for helping the causes and charities who need it most John Loyd Dean tackles charity from a personal and professional standpoint. Dean's main focus is charities that are based around helping children. Although, he spreads his altruism across many different avenues.

One of the most prominent of these charities included a 10K dollar donation to the Children’s Advocacy Center.

About Children’s Advocacy Center

Children’s Advocacy Center has a centralized location in Cleburne, Texas, but The Center services all of Johnson County.

Coming to fruition in February 1998, The Center focuses on serving child victims. The charity focuses on abused children. The charity also helps children who witness a homicide or violent crime, as well as children rescued from drug environments.

The Center’s warm and welcoming atmosphere introduce children to a holistic environment. Children are greeted at the door by specialized therapy dogs and have a range of resources available to them.

The Center works closely with Johnson County law enforcement to provide a safe and positive environment for children. Therefore, The Center offers an on-hand staff that includes two therapists, a direct service coordinator, and a victim’s services coordinator.

“This organization is changing children’s lives by ensuring the people responsible for these terrible acts are brought to justice,” John Loyd Dean said of the Advocacy Center.

The Center works with children, as well as their caregivers, to ensure the case is successful.
Plus, families working with the center have immediate access to much-needed assistance, such as counseling, emergency shelter.

Since the Children’s Advocacy Center has put its approach into action, the prosecution rate of cases involving children has increased by seventy-percent.

Dean says, “It’s all about working together to help ensure these children are safe from their abusers,”

10K Donation

It is due to the spirit of working together that made John Loyd Dean donate to this charity.
Dean truly connected with the goals this advocacy center is accomplishing, since this charity is in his native state, Texas.

However, to continue providing help and resources, to child victims and their families, Children’s Advocacy Center needs help. Johnson County law enforcement does a wonderful job of providing support.

Monetary donations are always needed. While resources are vital, being able to keep the lights on is just as important.

That is why John Loyd Dean decided to award his 10K dollar donation to this worthy charity.

The charities mission align with Dean’s on a personal level. However, the approach is working and there's documented proof. That is an asset that is rare with charities of this nature.

In summation, John Loyd Dean is proud to be able to help the children put their terrible past behind them. With his donation, Dean hopes to help children find justice and the help they need to move beyond their situation.

After all, children are proof that anything is possible. John Loyd Dean hopes that with his donation, the children will know how special they truly are.

Luis Alberto Peluso reflects on successful Mar del Plata poker event

Part of Buenos Aires Province, the Argentine city of Mar del Plata is the country's most prominent seaside beach resort and its seventh largest city.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, UNITED STATES, May 29, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — As part of the Latin American Poker Tour, the city played host to what would become its first officially organized poker tournament in an event largely orchestrated by lottery and casino industry expert Luis Alberto Peluso.

Luis Peluso has presided over numerous high profile events in the entertainment space but is particularly proud of bringing the Latin American Poker Tour to Mar del Plata. Speaking shortly after the event, Peluso commented, "I've been delighted with the development of the Latin American Poker Tour event as it has arrived in Argentina, held here in Mar del Plata, and hope that the event can be repeated."

He continues, "Our croupiers prepared for months to be able to perform in the way which they did. A significant part of that preparation was carried out in Las Vegas, USA."

Peluso further explains that the Las Vegas economy is primarily driven by tourism, gaming, and conventions. These, in turn, feed the city's restaurant and retail industries. "This was a key aspiration of the resort of Mar del Plata," he remarks, which at the time sought to grow its economy through the gaming and entertainment sectors.

"Poker in particular," adds Peluso. "Hundreds of millions of people around the world now enjoy poker."

Peluso points out that, rather than merely a game of chance, poker is instead a game of skill and ability. "It's a mathematical game, like a variation of chess," he suggests of its success.

The Mar del Plata poker event's top prize of $381,030, sponsored by online poker platform PokerStars, alongside the European Poker Tour, Asia Pacific Poker Tour, and North American Poker Tour, was scooped by Dominik Nitsche of Germany. Peluso vowed at the time to ensure future poker tournaments would take place in the resort city and casinos across Buenos Aires Province.

Also a major fishing port, before the arrival of the Latin American Poker Tour, Mar del Plata's purpose-built Estadio José María Minella stadium was host to six games in the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Slightly more recently, the city also hosted the 1995 Pan American Games, the 2001 Rugby World Cup Sevens, and, in 2003, the 2nd Parapan American Games.

Mar del Plata has subsequently gone on to host the FIBA Americas Championship in 2011, posed as the starting point for the 2012 Dakar Rally, and, taking place in 2015, held the 20th World Transplant Games.

Susan R Jeske and James M Irvine have announced their engagement and will be married in the Spring of 2018 at the Irvine Ranch Historic Park

IRVINE, CA, UNITED STATES, May 27, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — The CEO of the Ms. America® Pageant, Susan R. Jeske appointed My Luxe Wedding to custom design invitations for her wedding where she will be marrying James M. Irvine, the youngest grandson to the late James Irvine II who inherited about 115,000 acres in what is now Orange County, California.

A custom design studio that provides wedding invitations and menu's, My Luxe Wedding’s mission is to help clients treat their guests to the ultimate visual experience with invitations that boast elegant jewels, fabulous fabrics, exclusive papers and the most intricate design details.

Owners Andre and Nida Taylor worked closely with Jeske to incorporate elements of the invitation that were important to her.

They began the process by selecting a concept that was undeniably elegant yet timeless, tasteful and inviting to each guest of honor, which includes everyone that Susan and Jim invited. Each invitation was handmade with care and artistic flair.

A blush pink, dupioni silk fabric was selected for the base of the invitation and the paper layering combined ivory, gold and a patterned paisley to enhance the artwork on the announcement layer. An ivory satin ribbon was used to feature at its center-point, a hanging teardrop jewel that adorns the top of the invitation like a beautiful chandelier.

Just a hint of burgundy was incorporated to add a pop of Jim's favorite color.

The couple plan to marry at the Irvine Ranch Historic Park which is where the original Irvine family home was and is now the Katie Wheeler Library (named after James’s Aunt). James was born and raised in the home as a young boy. He will be the last Irvine that lived in the mansion, who will be married there.

Susan was crowned Ms. America® 1997 at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas winning $75,000 in cash and prizes. Some of her other titles include: Miss Orange County 1987, Miss Brea/Fullerton 1986 and Ms. California State 1996. In 1999 she purchased the Ms. America® Pageant and became its CEO. Since then she has grown the pageant into an institution that attracts high-achieving women from all walks of life to vie for the title and put it to philanthropic use. In 1993, Jeske set the still unbroken World Record, published in the Guinness Book of Records, for singing the National Anthem at the most events in a 24-hour period. She has sung all over the world and for 7 United States Presidents. In 2004, Susan was honored with the Presidential Service Lifetime Achievement Award from the President of the United States for her lifetime contributions to charity and volunteerism. Throughout her career she has been a spokesperson for several Fortune 500 companies including Hyundai Motor America and traveled worldwide to launch a natural skin care line called True Elements for Nikken International. www.SusanJeske.com.
