New trend in relationships and marriage is becoming socially acceptable and may see a decline in divorce rates in coming years.
TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, May 8, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — In this ever changing world, even monogamous relationship standards are starting to shift. Fifty years ago, married couples were predominantly monogamous. That is, committed to one another for life with the promise of no extramarital sexual encounters with others. Although there were reports of key parties in the 70’s where attendees went home with someone else’s partner, that might have been urban myth.
But now it seems that open relationships are becoming more popular as we realize that more than half of marriages fail, and most often due to unfaithfulness. By lifting that unrealistic restriction, committed couples are finding ways to avoid this pitfall.
Many couples are adopting the word “Monogamish”. First coined years ago by Dan Savage in his podcast “Savage Lovecast”, the word means “mostly monogamous with some leeway for playing outside the marriage”. This often means the couple have been given a ‘pass’ if an opportunity arises, but with the stipulation that there is a conversation to be had about it.
Cheating or reneging on the promise of fidelity, is what hurts relationships and marriages, not the actual act of sex with someone else. The feelings of betrayal, of not being good enough to keep your partners attention from straying, and of being lied to is what harms a relationship. By having an open and honest conversation, by setting rules and guidelines, and sharing after the fact, one can perhaps avoid the pitfalls mentioned above.
Tinder and many other dating apps are being used for hookups, and are furthering this trend by providing a platform for finding others looking for the same thing.
Swingers clubs, like The O Zone in Toronto, ON, is seeing an upswing in monogamous couples attending their parties as a way to spice up their sex lives or strengthen their connection to each other. They may or may not be interested in having sex with others, but enjoy the sexy, flirtatious atmosphere in the club. Many couples are finding their own comfort zone in the swinging lifestyle and adopting a Monogamish attitude.
“Swinging and swapping can be very liberating, and we hear many couples say that doing so has really strengthened their relationship” say The O Zone owners. “We just want to provide a space where our members are comfortable and can engage in whatever interests they have in a safe environment”.
With this trend toward open relationships and being ‘monogamish’, perhaps we will see a decline in the high rate of divorce in the coming years. We know that monogamy isn’t working, neither is cheating. Why not try something new?
