OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA, August 12, 2019 / — The Ontario South Asian Community Association (OSACA) is pleased to kick off the fourth day of its annual showcase event, the South Asian Festival (, the largest such festival in North America to celebrate the cultural heritage of the south Asian region.

The fourth day of the festival sees a new event in the form of Women of Influence at the National Arts Centre on the evening of Aug. 12. Aside from networking opportunities, it will feature a panel of notable south Asian women speaking about their path to success, challenges and inspirations, from Canada and the US. Opening remarks will be provided by Hon. Lisa MacLeod, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport as well as a spokesperson from the Human Concern International.

As a special thank you to those attending the debut Women of Influence event from 5-8 PM on Aug 12, their ticket entitles them to entry for a private screening of Abhay Deol’s latest film that’ll be attended by Abhay Deol himself later this year. “Line of Descent,” co-starring Brendan Fraser, Ronit Roy, Prem Chopra, Ekavali Khanna, Neeraj Kabi and Charlotte Poutrel, is the latest Bollywood-Hollywood cross-over to hit the screen since Slumdog Millionaire! The 10-day festival is sponsored by the TD Bank Group as its title sponsor as well as Fineqia International Inc. Financial support has also been provided by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport via its Celebrate Ontario 2019 program, the Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund (OCAF), Human Concern International, the City of Ottawa and the Rangar family.

Branded as the “TD SouthAsianFest,” it offers visitors a glimpse of arts, crafts, food, music and dance performances, primarily from the Indian sub-continent from Aug. 9 to Aug. 18. This year’s festival in being held in honour of the founder of the festival, Hunsdeep Singh Rangar (“Huns”), who tragically died in June this year (

Other eminent persons addressing the festival include the former Minister of Employment and Social Development Mr. Pierre Poilievre, the former Minister of State for Multiculturalism Mr. Tim Uppal and Ontario’s Associate Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction, the Hon. Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria.

On Aug. 13, visitors get a 15% discount as select Indian restaurants across the capital by simply stating they’re part of the celebration of south Asian food called FoodFest! Participating restaurants include Aahar, Brampton Authentic Indian Food, East India Company, India Curry and Kebab House, Mehfil Indian Cuisine and the Urban India Café.

From Aug. 14, the festival shifts to the Ottawa City Hall, with dance lessons from professional dancers, including Masala Bhangra at the Dance Showcase. On Aug. 15, artwork from local artists of south Asian background, or else influenced by the region, is featured in The Focus is ART!

On Friday Aug. 16, the Vedic Sanskruti organisation partners with the festival for live Gujarati dancing via the Garba in the Park show. On Aug. 17 and Aug. 18, the family-friendly shows continue with star south Asian singers from Canada, India, Pakistan, the UK and the US such as Sharry Mann, Miss Pooja, Raghav, H Dhami and Nasreen Shoshi performing on stage.

In addition, approximately 20 local singers, musicians and fashion designers will present their talent during the final two days of the festival. Festival fun will include entertainment such as henna artistry, face painting, magicians, bouncing castle installations, video games, among other items.

On the final day, an India Day parade will be held to celebrate India’s Independence Day, whereby a flag will be hoisted by His Excellency Vikas Swarup, High Commissioner of India to Canada.

During the entire weekend of Aug. 16-18, stage performances as part of the Mirch Masala Mega Mela are accompanied by vendor booths displaying culinary delights, arts and crafts from the Indian subcontinent and supported by Mirch Masala radio programs on CHIN Radio 97.9 FM.

OSACA’s TeamHuns members include Jagdeep Singh Perhar, Meeta Singh, Jyoti Bhuller, Meenakshi Sharma-Vadnais, Sheryl Singh Bagga, Becky Dipa Khan, Lovejot Singh Deo, Maipal Singh Bali, Chetan Sharma, Farid Pirzada, Anuj Joshi, Virender Chopra and Ilon Tyan, who has been the lead coordinator of activities.

Art Preservationist Ruth Brennan to be Featured on CUTV News Radio

RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA, UNITED STATES, August 12, 2019 / — Communities that support the arts are communities that thrive.

Ruth Brennan has dedicated her life to the promotion, support and preservation of the arts in South Dakota.

“The arts need a good, firm, strong foundation in the community,” says Brennan, “and I love the arts, period.”

Indeed, art administration has been the focus of Brennan’s professional and volunteer work for many years: she served on the board of the South Dakota Arts Council from 1988 to 2011, securing funding and programming; she has been a board member and panelist for Arts Midwest in Minneapolis and board member of South Dakotans for the Arts, followed by a consulting contract with that agency from 1999-2013. She was a member of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission from 1987-1995. From 1968-1983 she was the contracted arts reporter and columnist for the Rapid City Journal, the community’s daily newspaper, then later wrote a monthly arts column for the paper from 2004-2014.

Though not an artist herself in the conventional sense, Brennan has always had strong interest in the arts. She says her appreciation started with her mother, whose Drake University degree was in piano performance.

“My mother started me on piano when I was five,” recalls Brennan. “I was never more than a mediocre pianist, but it introduced me to all kinds of music. She made sure that she took me to the community concerts in Sioux Falls where my family lived, to hear musicians from all over the world, so I grew up with music and theater. We did not have art galleries in our community until I finished high school.”

Brennan was instrumental in the creation of the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City. Brennan says the highlight of her career was having a gallery named after her in the Dahl Arts Center. Today, the Ruth Brennan Gallery stands as a reminder of Brennan’s unique and profound contribution to the arts community of South Dakota.

The top of the table highlights a carved, inlaid and painted flag with 35 stars, symbolizing West Virginia's statehood on June 20, 1863, at the height of the Civil War.

The side supports on the table resemble anchors, the legs are formed like cannons and the cross braces are shaped like rifles. Also, the feet represent cannonballs. "The workmanship of this piece is truly stunning," Mr. Woody said. "It’s a fine historical piece that I hope finds its way back to West Virginia."

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK, August 7, 2019 / — Danish hygge is spreading around the world as people seek out ways to live happier lives. Hygge, however, is about more than simple “coziness”. She said: “First of all, most personalized books are made for children. I was surprised by the limited options for adults – after all, we also have love to give and to receive. But even those I could find weren’t quite what I wanted.

“Photo and story books can be lovely and personal, but they can be incredibly time-consuming, because you need to come up with the story or captions. Even if you do have the time to be creative, not everyone does.

“And then, of course, there’s the cost… These types of gifts can be expensive, making them less than ideal for someone who wants to show their love through action.

"But these problems paled in comparison to the vision I had in my mind. I have a passion to create beautiful books with amazing illustrations that would suit just about any personal style. I wanted them to be chock-full of love and joy – and to be convenient and affordable, too!”

That is where the idea for Story No. 9 came from.

Even though Nhi is a marketing professional by qualification, art has always been her passion. She knew creating artistic love books required more creative hands and loving hearts. She teamed up with Nataly Tsiapalo, Ming Luke and Hamza Aytac Dalgalidere. For the last few years, they have worked tirelessly together, connecting across the world to create love tickets. They have one common mission: to spread love and celebrate the little things.
