As a small, nimble business with steadfast clients, we've been able to adapt and bring important, researched works to the market in a more virtual manner. Pivoting to online auctions has not hurt us.”

— Andrew Jones

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES, CA, UNITED STATES, July 28, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Andrew Jones Auctions achieved phenomenal results across multiple categories in its Design for the Home & Garden auction held online, July 26th. The auction was 95 percent sold and grossed $1.6 million. The top lot was a spectacular still life oil on canvas painting by Nicolai Fechin (Russian, 1881-1955). It changed hands for $262,500.

Bidding for the circa 1925 painting, titled Still life with flowers and fruit, opened above the high estimate figure of $100,000 and quickly climbed to its final selling price. Fechin was a master of
color and composition. The painting was from the collection of Mary and Lou Silver from Indian Wells, California. Most lots in the 261-lot auction were from the Silvers’ outstanding collection.

The Silver collection included important fine art, sculpture, micro mosaics, antiques, art glass, design and a Steinway grand piano. Also offered were items from the estate of Ruth Harvey of Bel Air, California and fine silver and antiques from a Northern California estate. Various fine art selections and exquisite objects struck a chord with decorators, collectors and millennials.

“We are grateful that, as a small and nimble business with steadfast clients, we have been able to adapt and bring important, researched works to the market in a more virtual manner,” said Andrew Jones, president and CEO of Andrew Jones Auctions. He added, “The interest garnered and the prices reached are very encouraging. Pivoting to online-only auctions has not hurt us.”

To prepare for this auction, Andrew Jones Auctions decided to open for preview by appointment only for three days. “We restricted the number of clients that could be in the gallery to four at a time and took every precaution including temperature checks, mask requirements, hand sanitizer and constant surface cleaning,” Mr. Jones said. “All in all, clients were delighted to be able to preview and were impressed with the lengths we went to, to protect the health and safety of all.”

With no in-room audience, a full complement of phone bidders stationed on distanced tables and active online platforms brought in buyers from around the world. Around 3,500 people registered to bid online, via AndrewJonesAuctions.com, Invaluable.com and LiveAuctioneers.com. In addition, 200 in-house registrations for absentee and telephone bidding were also recorded.

Following are additional highlights from the auction. All prices quoted include a sliding scale buyer’s premium.

The sale realized consistently strong results from start to finish. The collection of Mary and Lou Silver featured an impressive Italian micro mosaic table top attributed to 19th century mosaicist Cesare Roccheggiani ($45,000); a Marc Lalique glass ‘Cactus’ center table ($42,500) and a vibrant indoor scene by Helen Maria Turner titled Meditating by the Window ($40,000).

Fine silver shone with an impressive pair of trays by the master silversmith Paul Storr engraved with an elaborate coat of arms from the estate of Ruth Harvey, making $30,000 and $27,500, respectively. Also, a Roman marble bust of a barbarian from a private London collector doubled its presale high estimate, selling for a respectable $50,000.

A collection of early English silver from a California estate was led by a rare set of four George II tumbler cups by Edward Feline, London, which made $13,750. The same estate saw a set of six George III weighted candlesticks by John Carter bring $13,750. From another owner, an Indian Colonial five-piece tea and coffee service commanded $10,000.

Andrew Jones Auctions’ next big event will be a Fine Jewelry, Watches and Timepieces Auction slated for Tuesday, Sept. 15. Included will be additional offerings from the Mary and Lou Silver collection, to include dazzling pieces by Jorge Adeler, Asprey, Buccellati, Bulgari, Cartier, Patek Philippe, Petochi, Van Cleef & Arpels, David Yurman and many others.

A selection of mantel clocks from the French Empire by Akiba Antiques on August 4th, written by Auction Daily

EDGEATER, NEW JERSEY, UNITED STATES, July 28, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Leading the catalog of Akiba Antiques’ August 4th Eclectic Collection of Estates Worldwide event is a selection of mantel clocks from the French Empire. The French Empire-style clocks (USD 65,000 – $95,000) were created in the early 19th century. A piece offered in the auction, made of gilt bronze and red griotte marble shows a woman carrying sheaves of wheat, visually balanced on either side by a farmer and an ox harvesting a field. It has a white enamel dial below the central figure, a detailed bezel, and ormolu animals on the front. The clock’s distinct style can be traced to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte, who prompted a French design trend favoring elaborate and gilded decoration.

A mantel clock ($30,000 – $60,000) attributed to Louis-Isidore Choiselat, a Parisian bronze caster, is also included in the auction. It shows two boys carrying the dial on a bale of cotton. A chained monkey perches on top while netting hangs in the space between the figures. Another clock emphasizes the classical motifs popular during the 19th century, showing Cupid and Psyche leaning on a pedestal ($20,000 – $30,000). Based on the Greek and Roman myth surrounding the god of love, the couple is shown examining a gilt butterfly in Cupid’s hands. A 20th-century clock ($15,000 – $25,000) depicts a group of cherubs carrying absinthe vines.

The Estates Worldwide sale might also attract Ernest Trova collectors. Table Man, offered in the sale, is a variant of Trova’s Falling Man series, which he called “man at his most imperfect.” It is a stainless-steel sculpture by the American artist with an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000. Executed in 1979, this piece comes from an edition of eight. Flowing Man ($6,000 – $12,000), which shows Trova’s signature figure taking a step forward, is also available. The shape of the figure flows out behind him in a diminishing triangle.

This auction also boasts mantel clocks in popular styles across centuries and national boundaries. A Lalique France glass mantel clock ($300 – $600) with tall flower designs will be offered alongside a German Gothic Revival clock ($500 – $1,500). The latter has a mahogany wood frame and gilt bronze decorations.

Additional highlights crossing the auction block include a notable pair of Chinese huanghuali wood chairs ($8,000 – $12,000). A variant of rosewood, huanghuali is hailed for its translucent sheen and unusual patterns. Openwork dragon motifs decorate the backs of the available chairs. Collectors of Chinese art can also consider a palace-sized carved jade boulder showing village scenes and buddhas ($2,500 – $5,000).

Akiba Antiques was founded in the 1980s in Paris by Charles and Franceska Akiba. They have a joint collecting and selling experience in French furniture and European art. The couple eventually moved to the United States and settled in Dania Beach, Florida, where the auction house continues to host regular sales both live and online.

Bidding for these items will begin at 4:00 PM EDT on Tuesday, August 4th, 2020 at Dania Beach, Florida. Over 530 lots that include decorative art, jewelry, fine art, and Asian art, will be offered. Visit LiveAuctioneers to place an online bid and the Akiba Antiques website for more information.

How to Catch Wahoo in Bimini Explained by Brandon Cole Anderson

Wahoo tournament expert, Brandon Cole Anderson, explains the ins and outs of fishing in the Bahamas.

SARASOTA, FL, USA, July 28, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — The giant fish species called wahoo, also known as ono, draws sports fishers from around the world to the Bahamas every year. The fish are both tasty and fun to catch but require specific skills and techniques. Many people compare the taste of wahoo to that of mackerel, and it is used in premium cuisines across the world. Brandon Cole Anderson, an expert on wahoo fishing and tournaments, explains what it takes to catch wahoo in Bimini.

The Bahamas are known as excellent wahoo fishing grounds between November and March. However, West End and Bimini tend to be the most popular fishing spots due to their proximity to Florida and calmer waters. When winds are between 15-20 knots, Brandon Cole Anderson explains that the gulf stream is very rough and dangerous for small boats. Be on the lookout for optimal weather conditions, which usually only last for 1-2 days.

It's important to remember that you must pass through customs at the Bahamas and fuel up your boat before beginning your fishing trip. Next, you'll want to head over the western edge of the Little Bahama bank. Brandon Cole Anderson recommends fishing around the drop-off, which spans approximately 50 miles long. Big wahoo gathers along the dramatic edges of the shelf. Brandon explains that these sections are known to fishermen as Sandy, Memory Rock, and White Sands waters.

Wahoo tends to bite the most when the outgoing tide is strong, and the light conditions are low. Despite this, wahoo in Bimini can still be caught during the day in the right water and crossing conditions. Brandon Anderson notes that toll lines should run around 175 ft. deep, but can range from 150 to 450 feet deep depending on where you find the fish gathering. For the best results, Brandon Cole Anderson suggests covering as much ground as possible in a zig-zag pattern at varying depths. If you are too shallow, however, you will be more likely to catch barracuda.

According to Brandon, wahoo are some of the fastest fish in the world and can catch baits at speeds upwards of 20 mph. Keep your eye on the GPS. Your speed will be based on if you are going with or against the current. Every hull is different, so you have to find the sweet spot for your conditions.

When fishing for wahoo, larger lures are generally better due to the light fishing pressure and amount of large, aggressive fish. Brandon Cole Anderson recommends running four lines at different weights and lengths. The shortest line should be the heaviest and run at about 150 feet behind the boat. The second line should run at 200ft behind the boat, followed by another at 250 ft.

Professionals in tournaments often use a fourth line if they are very experienced. Brandon Cole Anderson does not recommend running any lures longer than 300ft.

The rise and success XD on Instagram

XD Comedy Account

XD Comedy Account

The comedy page X.D. has rapidly gained popularity around the world.

DOHA, QATAR, July 28, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — X.D, a popular comedy account is known for its comedic videos and content that has a lighter take on serious issues. It has recently surpassed the 3.5 million follower mark on Instagram. The founders of X.D has in time revealed how the page went from being a personal account to hosting hundreds of new videos, photos, and memes each month.

Known as X.D, the creative team behind the comedy featured on the page has quickly captivated millions of followers around the world with their wit and satirical take on current affairs. The page, which was created and operated as a personal account has now managed to gain more than 3.5 million followers and hosts roughly 6,5000 posts. “Instagram is filled with similar accounts, but X.D has managed to stand out from the crowd. A different take on the usual has given inspiration to the hundreds of photos, memes, and videos currently on the page,” shares a spokesperson for X.D.

The millions of followers seemed to have taken notice of the various videos and photos currently available on the page. The wide variety of content ranges from politics, education, current affairs, and mostly comedic reenactments of notable public figures. Although the account has gained massive popularity throughout its 6-year lifespan, X.D is not quickly going to change how they keep followers entertained.

“We want followers and those alike to know and understand that X.D. has and will always be a comedic page. We don’t represent any company or high-profile brand, we’re an authentic and humoristic page, with an individual opinion and stance the public domain,” shared the spokesperson.
Although the identities of X.D will remain anonymous, followers of the page have seen a great deal of interaction and engagement from its founders. In the past, X.D. has shared how they try their best to keep in contact with their followers, and those looking to receive an honorable mention on both the X.D Instagram and/or Snapchat accounts.

The well-established name of X.D on Instagram gives political and less-comedic affairs a different façade – as followers can share their videos, photos, or memes with X.D. The account is a true and original take, as X.D creates and publishes their thoughts on serious issues that are being ignored or downplayed in a bigger spectrum of the global environment.

A remarkably high percentage of its content is published in both English and Arabic, targeting followers and social media users situated in the Middle East and bordering nations. In the past, some authoritarian figures, and entities, not just in the Middle East, but other Western nations as well, may have deemed satirical content such as that of X.D as unacceptable. This has shown how many nations are becoming more relaxed about the humoristic backlashes received from notable social media figures.

The spokesperson shares that, “X.D. isn’t politically orientated or targeting one set of political, cultural or social values, that’s not our gain. X.D wants to bring comedic relief, laughter, and relaxation to those who are tired of the constant bashing received from mainstream media. If you look at similar accounts, you will notice the variation in the approach X.D. has taken, being more open to followers, and creating a platform whereby others can join in on its expansion.”

Instagram has over 1 billion monthly users, and as latest statistics revealed, around 89% of its users live outside of the U.S. The potential for a page like that of X.D is unthinkable, as research has shown that roughly 849.3 million users are reached with Instagram advertising and marketing tools found on the app.
Although X.D is not planning to reshape the page into something in the lines of advertising or marketing, followers can expect that it will remain a witty, clever, and authentic page. The firm foundation it has created over the last few years has revealed the need and popularity for this assortment of accounts.

Bill Lockyer Discusses the Top 3 Non-Fiction Histories You Must Read in 2020

Bill Lockyer

Bill Lockyer

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA, July 27, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Bill Lockyer served in a distinguished political career as the former California State Treasurer and former Attorney General of California. He served in the legislature for over twenty-five years – more than half of that time was spent in the senate. As a lover of the law, he also found a passion for historical non-fiction and the lessons that it can teach us today.

“After all, as George Santayana said, ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,’” says Bill Lockyer. “I think that’s true in politics, in the law, and in life. I’m fascinated by the patterns of the past and the lessons that we can glean from them. With everything that’s going on in the world, I think we could all use a little historical perspective to help us make sense of things.”

The books on his recommendation list are from multiple decades and comprise a sort of “greatest hits” list, Bill Lockyer informs us.

Bill Lockyer’s Recommendation for a Good History of Economics Read
“Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies, is one of the all-time classics for a reason,” says Bill Lockyer, long-time non-fiction enthusiast. At its core, it’s exploring the answer to why economics developed so unevenly around the world.

The author, Jared Diamond, published the book in 1997 and it quickly became a New York Times bestseller and a Pulitzer Prize Winner. In the book, he hypothesizes that the arc of human history drastically shifted under the pressure of geographic, biological, and environmental factors, creating the superpowers that still rule the world today.

“If you love non-fiction, this is not really an original recommendation,” admits Bill Lockyer. But it’s a fantastic read and completely worth your time if you haven’t read it yet.”

A Perfect Read if You Love Teddy Roosevelt Says Bill Lockyer

The Imperial Cruise: A Secret History of Empire and War takes a closer look at Teddy Roosevelt’s time in office and explores the dark side of American foreign policy.

“It almost reads like a thriller,” enthuses Bill Lockyer. “This is a truly thorough examination of the development of foreign policy through the lens of racism and how it affected every aspect of the growth of our nation.” Bill Lockyer calls it a “must-read.”

Bill Lockyer Loves This Examination of Homelessness in America

Golden Gates: Fighting for Housing in America explores the question, “Why are there so many homeless people in America?”

“As a country, we were built on the belief that everyone deserves a shot at the American dream. This a look at what happens when that dream is unobtainable. It’s a discussion about the systemic problems that promote homelessness in our country – and it’s an examination of how we can fix this growing epidemic,” says Bill Lockyer.

Results were strong across all categories. Fine art, furniture, Asian arts, everything did well. We had an active online bidding crowd and items were flying. The Chinese plaque was the cherry on top.”

— Kevin Bruneau

CRANSTON, RI, UNITED STATES, July 27, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Several weeks before Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers’ online-only Antiques & Fine Art auction on Thursday, July 23rd, a seller strolled into the gallery on a walk-in appraisal Tuesday holding what appeared to be a nice Chinese Qing Dynasty porcelain famille rose plaque with calligraphy. Bruneau slid it into the sale, assigning it a modest estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

All that changed once the bidding began. “When lot 268 opened on my computer screen it was already up to $24,000,” said Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. auctioneer and the firm’s Director of Pop Culture. “I knew I had a determined bidder and he ended up taking it home for $96,250, including buyer’s premium. The best part is, it was a walk-in. You never know what’s out there.”

Turns out, the Republic Period porcelain and enamel famille rose plaque was exceptionally well painted by Wang Qi (Chinese, 1884-1937), a member of the renowned Eight Friends of Zhushan, a group of 19th and 20th century Chinese porcelain painters. Zhushan is near Jingdezhen, China’s former porcelain capital and site of the imperial kiln during both the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The plaque, 17 ½ inches by 10 ¼ inches, depicted two figures plus a calligraphic poem with signatures. It was also signed with a chop seal. It came from the estate of a Hope Valley, Rhode Island lady and was by far the top lot of the auction, which featured more than 300 lots, collected from estates across New England. Everything was sold to the highest bidder, with no reserves.

“COVID-19 is certainly not slowing down the auction world, that’s for sure,” remarked Kevin Bruneau, the president of Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers. “Results were incredibly strong across all categories. Fine art, furniture, Asian arts, everything was selling strong. We had an incredibly active online bidding crowd and items were flying. The Chinese plaque was the cherry on top.”

Following are additional highlights from the auction. Internet bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com, Bidsquare.com and bidLIVE.Bruneauandco.com, plus the mobile app “Bruneau & Co.” on iTunes and GooglePlay. Phone and absentee bids were also taken. All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium.

An Impressionist etching by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (Mass./U.K./France, 1834-1903), of sailing vessels at sea, 5 inches by 6 ¾ inches and housed in a 14 ¾ inch by 18 ¾ inch frame, artist signed with a monogram in the image and in pencil lower margin, brought $7,500. Whistler was active during the American Gilded Age. He’s best known for his painting Whistler’s Mother.

A resume and work portfolio for John B.G. Babcock, the Coordinator of Interior Displays for Tiffany & Co. from 1969-1974 and the Assistant to the Director of Fashion Merchandise at B. Altman & Co. from 1974-1976, realized $5,938. The portfolio included a copy of his resume, his business card for Tiffany & Co., and over 50 examples of interior settings Babcock designed.

A vibrant blue, green, yellow and red depiction of Peter Max’s (Germany/N.Y., b. 1937) iconic Liberty Head image, artist signed, sold for $5,625. The acrylic on canvas on a TriMar stretcher was 24 inches all four sides. Peter Max is known for using bright colors in his art. Works by him are associated with the visual arts and culture of the 1960s, notably psychedelic art and pop art.

A colorful egg tempera on paper depiction of an angelic figure in abstract by David Clyde Driscoll (Md./Washington, D.C., 1931-2020), titled Masked Angel on verso, 14 ½ inches by 12 ½ inches (22 inches by 20 inches framed), artist signed lower left, sold within estimate for $4,688. David Clyde Driscoll studied with James A. Porter, for whom he accredits his career.
