Lift Every Voice 2021

Lead by the vibrant younger BHERC members, this new “Signature” program elevates the voices of extraordinary writers and spoken word artists around the globe.

Spoken word artists, poets, and creative writers bring words to life with poetic agility, visual acuity, and agitated vocal percussion; The voice of the people. We are looking for those voices.”

— Sandra J. Evers-Manly, President & Founder BHERC

HOLLYWOOD, CA, USA, March 31, 2021 / — The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) along with the capable hands of its NextGen members, with pride and great excitement, announces a Call For Entries for the inaugural BHERC “Lift Every Voice” (LEV) program. This fresh and new Written and Spoken Word Competition introduces a modern pathway for expressions of the “Spoken Word” artistic medium to increase its visibility on the world stage. Beginning April 2, 2021, thru April 23, 2021, 11 PM PDT, anyone who is age 16 and above is eligible to submit. About the Competition
An original creation of BHERC, “Lift Every Voice” (LEV) is managed by member Robert McCune and is an important opportunity to create recognition for poets and spoken word artists, especially the younger generation. With the intent to tap into the power of words and ideas, and to engage and nurture a younger generation, LEV intends to create a bridge to understanding the issues — both legacy and contemporary — that many people face today. “‘Lift Every Voice’ is an opportunity for writers and performers to speak for themselves, their families, and the world they live in. Considering the impact of the current climate of the world, and how it has proven to be debilitating, frustrating, resulting in tragedy for so many, this show provides a platform highlighting an area of artistry that is often overlooked.” stated Robert McCune, LEV Program Director. This program also allows BHERC LEV to call out across the globe in search of talented spoken word artists who are ready to let their words be heard. BHERC wants them to be seen and heard and all forms of prose are accepted. However, what makes this program “fresh” and “next level” is the addition of the online, character-driven, multi-episode competition.

About the Program Director
Robert McCune is a Spoken Word Artist who believes that having such a gift is equivalent to having a “superpower”. He is a passionate believer that your voice, your thoughts, and your ideas can and do help people. Most of all, he believes that writers are needed to create narratives for the world in ways where love always wins. Born and raised in Pittsburg California, Robert now resides in Oakland, California. He attended Holy Names University, where I received a degree in behavioral psychology. He is a proud husband, father, writer, critical thinker, and basketball coach.

The competition will span ten weeks, in which finalists will compete in different writing and performance challenges each week. Eliminations will take place weekly, where only the top-scoring will move on towards the cash prizes.

During the competition, contestants will be judged on their written works, the performance of those works, and how well their works encompassed their challenges for that week. “‘Lift Every Voice’ puts the voicings of many stories of joy and sadness, survival, healing, and triumph across the globe front and center. No one can tell these stories with more poetic agility, visual acuity, and agitated vocal percussion than spoken word artists, poets, and creative writers. They are the voice of the people. The voice of humanity!” elated Sandra J. Evers-Manly, President and Founder of BHERC. Each week Judges will mentor the contestants and go through their creative process, share a bit about the finalists and how they are handling the competition. Contestants will be expected to give testimonials, embrace competition contrary to their fellow writers, and try to gain as much exposure as possible.

— Niko Cangemi, company's CEO

Check out Aeri, an innovation that disrupts the way people enjoy the outdoors. Aeri is the first of its kind to enter the consumer canopy category with an instant inflatable shade canopy. Unlike traditional metal canopies that are challenging to set up, let alone pack away once finished, Aeri is lightweight and sets up quickly so you can fully enjoy your favorite outdoor adventures with ease.

This patent-pending ultraportable canopy is lightweight at only 17lbs (half the weight of traditional metal-framed canopies), offers a spacious 10ftW x 10ftL x 8ft H coverage, is easy to set up solo, and has a quick set up time of 3-minutes thanks to the included rechargeable air pump. Aeri features a backpack carrying case for ease of transport, provides UPF 50+ shade for extreme sun protection, and comes in three gorgeous colorways: Ultra Marine Blue, Carbon Gray, and Heat Wave Orange.

Aeri will be running a crowdfunding campaign soon to bring the product to life. A limited amount of the Aeri Canopy will be available for early bird pre-order, with estimated worldwide delivery of summer 2021.

You’ll never miss a valuable moment again with the stress-free setup of this one-of-a-kind canopy.

Alex Laetsch and Niko Cangemi, Co-Founders of Aeri, were inspired by the absence of shade products that deliver on ease of set-up. “We started looking at the canopy category where we are able to leverage our expertise and found that outdoor shade coverings were ripe for innovation. We want consumers to be able to focus on what truly matters and soak up all the benefits of being outdoors without the hassle and that’s how we thought of creating an ultra-portable inflatable shade canopy that can be set up in minutes, and can be packed down into a backpack when finished. It is so easy to set up, only one person is required. It is the true 'Go Anywhere, Do Anything Canopy'.” describes Cangemi, the CEO of the company.

Rob C. Owens Artistry to be Featured on Close Up Radio

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES, March 31, 2021 / — Rob C. Owens is a self-taught portrait artist who has crafted his own unique artistic style: photo-realistic pencil portraits and oil paintings of historically significant icons.

“I try to do things that people can connect with,” says Owens. “What I try to do with my artwork is paint people everyone is familiar with for nostalgia and to get in touch with their character.”

His photorealistic portraits of Prince, President Barack Obama, Malcolm X, Bob Marley and Billie Holiday have won him great acclaim.

Owens comes from a family of artists. Growing up, he admired his mother’s uncanny artistic abilities, discovering his own artistic gifts at the age of six.

Born and raised in Chicago, the city’s influence can be found throughout Owens’s work.

“I absolutely love Chicago. I've been all over the world, but I haven't been anywhere like my hometown,” says Owens. “Ultimately as an artist, I want to tell a story of things that people may not necessarily know. I want people to share a better understanding of my city through our iconography. Chicago is not its crime and violence. Chicago is Michael Jordan, Obama, Oprah. I'm trying to tap into these themes to connect to the area where I live.”

Owens’s painting of Obama is actually the only oil painting he’s held on to for personal reasons.

“That wasn’t a commission,” recalls Owens. “Being of African-American descent, the first black president was a major thing, and I was motivated to capture him in that moment. It’s become one of my more popular images and I've had offers over the years, but I’ve decided to hold on to it. It really reflects how I feel about him being from the South side of Chicago.”

Owens is a firefighter, a therapist, but being a professional artist is his true passion.

“My goal and my legacy, what I'm really trying to do, is leave something positive for the generations of people that come after me,” says Owens. “I just hope I did something to contribute some good to the world. And if people admire me for taking my time out to hone my craft.”

Close Up Radio will feature Rob C. Owens in an interview with Doug Llewelyn on April 2nd at 3pm EST

— Tomeka Evans

WASHINGTON DC, UNITED STATES, March 31, 2021 / — Socie-tee Apparel, a socially conscious clothing company, is supporting local artists while elevating poignant awareness and reform messaging through the artwork of D.C. creators.

Tomeka Evans, founder and owner of Socie-tee Apparel, combined her love of the arts, passion for social justice, and interest in providing financial support to underserved communities by establishing an apparel company that performs all three.

Evans carefully selects young, promising artists from across the D.C. area for an opportunity to earn extra income through Socie-tee Apparel’s custom-designed clothing.

“I wanted to provide a platform that will give a voice to young artists,” said Evans. “I also wanted to make it as easy as possible for them to earn money without the logistics and start-up costs of launching a business.”

With a focus on low-income and marginalized communities, these artists are given a portion of the products’ profit.

“I was raised in a low-income neighborhood in Norfolk, V.A.,” said Evans. “I know that any extra income would have helped my mother tremendously with food, gas, bills, childcare expenses, and even leisurely activities. My goal, through this company, is to provide supplemental payments to artists in order to improve their quality of life, thereby contributing to the community as a whole.”

Diversity in the creators’ backgrounds and culture, each with unique perspectives and art styles, translate into unforgettable creations, shining spotlights on matters of widespread interest. Dubbed ‘shirts with a purpose’, recent pieces address concerns surrounding anti-violence, unity, and equality.

Evans is on a mission to give a voice to the voiceless, while providing financial opportunities, in an uplifting and encouraging environment.

Under the guidance of Jay Sokolowski, PetDine Senior Production Manager, the Fort Collins facility will utilize the company’s access to more than 300 high-quality ingredients to increase output of pet product formulations unique to each client. Unlike most pet product manufactures, PetDine’s distinctive production process uses no water, which can produce mold, and no heat, which can change the integrity, viability and structure of the product or chew. Health and safety are top priorities, so products are manufactured without such ingredients as corn, wheat, sugars, salts, artificial colors and gumming agents.

“Whether it is liquid pet food toppers, natural animal chews or powders, we want to provide the best health benefits to our four-legged friends and outstanding results at a faster pace for our clients,” said Jay Sokolowski, PetDine Senior Product Manager.

Top ideas for a vacation in Dubai

Story of bigreddxb

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, March 30, 2021 / — A city of glamorous skyscrapers and exciting attractions, Dubai is an all-time favorite tourist spot for many across the globe. Having successfully achieved a careful balance between the old and the new, between traditional culture and modern technology, the city of Dubai welcomes its guests with open arms and an assortment of activities which they are bound to love.

Visitors can stroll along the Jumeirah Public Beach to watch the sunrise over the glimmering high-rises, or they can marvel at the magnificent sprawl of the city from a bird’s eye view while enjoying a hot air balloon ride. Or if they’re in the mood for a nice stress-busting shopping trip, there are several spectacular malls they can check out, such as the Dubai Mall or the Emirates Mall.

Here are some of the top ideas for those thinking of vacationing in Dubai:

Going on a dune buggy tour
Going on a dune buggy Dubai tour is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Dubai. By strapping themselves into dune buggies and quad bikes, visitors will be able to experience the breath-taking natural beauty of the Arabian desert with their own eyes. And if they’re lucky, they might even be able to glimpse the sun setting over the horizon!

The buggy companies rent out vehicles ranging from one-seater to four-seater quad bikes so that tourists can enjoy a solo ride through the sand dunes or they can enjoy the trip with their loved ones. During the safari, they will be provided with protective equipment and outfit, and refreshments by the buggy rental service. A friendly guide will also accompany the guests during their visit to advise them along the way and make sure that they have a safe and exciting adventure.

Easily one of the most thrilling activities imaginable, skydiving in Dubai is a special treat for adrenaline junkies. Soaring at about 13,000 ft above ground, tourists will be able to see the stunning view of the city and the wide-spread sand dunes of the Arabian desert. Dubai welcomes both first-timers looking to cross off skydiving from their bucket list and experienced flyers wanting to test their skills out.

Jet skiing
Another way to experience the incredible sights of Dubai is to go on a jet ski tour around all of the city’s finest high-rise buildings and attractions. Some of the iconic places that tourists might see during the ride include the skyscraper Burj Khalifa, the luxury hotel resort Atlantis, The Palm, as well as the Dubai Marina Skyline and Burj Al-Arab. Visitors can jet ski with their family or friends, and they can also go on solo tours. Amongst these marine activities, they can also try out flyboarding and even kite tubing. In fact, there’s a whole beach known as “Kite Beach” in Dubai dedicated to such marine sports.

Going on a hot air balloon ride
For those visiting the area sometime around October till the start of the summer season, going on a hot air balloon ride should be a definite item on their travel bucket list. There are several travel and adventure companies within the region offering these rides. Along with enjoying the fresh air thousands of feet above the ground, travelers will also enjoy the lovely view of the Arabian Desert.

After the flight ends, visitors might even get to further roam the beautiful sand dunes in old vintage Land Rovers. And to top it all off, there will be a gourmet breakfast in an authentic desert setting for visitors to enjoy once they finish exploring the area.

Visiting the underwater world at Dubai Aquarium
Situated on the ground floor of Dubai Mall, the Dubai Aquarium is a massive suspended tank home to a whopping 140 different marine life species. Once tourists have made their purchases from the mall, they can drop by this aquarium and meander through the tunnels, which provide a mesmerizing 270-degree view of the sea life all around them.

Visitors can also go on glass-bottom boat tours to view the tank from beneath their feet, or if they’re feeling particularly adventurous, they can go cage snorkeling and even shark diving to get a closer look at these marine species. These species include Sand Tiger Sharks, Leopard Sharks, Tawny Nurse Sharks as well as Stingrays.

Continuing further into the aquarium, visitors will enter the Underwater Zoo, which will guide them through three zones; Rainforest, Rocky Shore, and Living Ocean. They will meet even more amazing aquatic creatures such as otters, jellyfish, seahorses, and even crocodiles in this area.

Visiting the Dubai Miracle Garden
Described by many as “heaven on earth”, the Dubai Miracle Garden is a must-visit place for any nature lover. With more than 150 million plants and flowers in full bloom, this 72,000-sq-m garden is home to some of the most impressive and picturesque flower structures and displays.

One of the most outstanding displays in this garden is the eighteen-meter high flower structure of Mickey Mouse, which has won a Guinness record for the World’s Largest Topiary Structure. Disney fans will also find other familiar characters from Disney World, including Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Pluto the Pup. All in all, this garden is definitely unlike any visitors have ever seen before.

Enjoying nature at the Dubai Butterfly Garden
Another garden that visitors should visit during their vacation is the Dubai Butterfly Garden. Situated right next to the Miracle Garden, this park proclaims to be the “World’s Largest Covered Butterfly Garden”. It houses around 15,000 butterflies of over 50 varieties of butterflies in various colors and sizes.

These beautiful winged creatures often land on the visitors’ hands and shoulders, giving them an excellent chance to view them close-up. There’s also a Butterfly Museum within the park that features the creative artworks of professional artisans using real butterflies. Visitors can even grab a special butterfly souvenir from the store located right at the garden’s entrance next to the museum.
